In the centuries that followed the emergence of the first city states around 800 BC, the Greeks developed art, founded cities throughout the Mediterranean and, at Athens, developed democracy, a new form of political organisation. The city states, however, were continually warring among themselves and were conquered by the Macedonians in the fourth century BC.
